The future of privacy: Applying distributed ledger technology for security and privacy in the cloud
Abstract
The right to privacy or, better known as, the right to be forgotten (RTBF) can only be lawfully enforced if you are a citizen of the European Union (Vaas, 2019), leaving the rest of the world open to personal identifiable data (PII) exposure. PII misuse is a breach of a person’s confidentiality, which could lead to malicious activities, such as identify theft, stalking, selling one’s personal identifiable data (PII) on the dark web, and much more. This research explores the use of a distributed ledger technology (DLT), commonly referred to as blockchain, to secure the privacy of individuals. This paper explores how a distributed ledger which is open to its peers by default can actually provide privacy and security for individual peers on a network.
Background/Context/Description: Workplace or personal project?
I work as a secure software engineer and am testing and developing blockchain software for personal reasons which help me at work, resulting in professional outcomes.
Project Aim/Objectives:
To create a simple and practical framework, and/or matrix, which could guide non-technical users on how DLT could be applied to specific use case-scenarios. Beyond this paper, further research could be facilitated to develop actual software, which acts as a Privacy-as-a-Service through custom software development, Blockchain-as-a-Service service providers or other means such inbuilt DLT in Infrastructure-as-Code deployments.

I am studying the Master of Cloud Computing and Virtualisation, where the subject ITC568 Cloud Privacy and Security spiked my interest.
